Scientists at National Taiwan University have developed a new hair regrowth serum that may help people get their hair back in just 20 days. The serum works by reactivating hair follicles that have stopped producing hair.
The researchers disclosed that the serum is composed of naturally occurring fatty acids that invigorate the hair cells that have gone into hibernation and at the same time initiate the growth of new hair. Conducting laboratory tests on mice, they found out that when the skin is irritated in a mild way, fat cells located under the skin coordinate the release of certain fatty acids. These acids then activate the stem cells in the hair follicles to start the production of hair again.
In order to prove the point, lead scientist Professor Sung-Jan Lin experimented the serum on his own body. Three weeks after the application on his thigh area, new hair growth was visible there, thus indicating the power of the treatment.
That is the gist of the story:
- A mild irritation of the skin takes immune cells to the fat layer.
- These cells in turn cause fat tissues to release fatty acids such as oleic acid and palmitoleic acid
- The fatty acids thus obtain hair follicles and induce new hair growth.
Irritating the skin is not the most desirable thing to do, so the scientists have come up with a special serum that already has the fatty acids mixed in alcohol. Without the skin irritation, this version works just as well.
The team of scientists has put the formula under patent protection and is lining up human trials after that. The serum, if it works, will be a new, simple, and convenient method of doing away with hair loss in the future.
Nonetheless, this finding spills the cup of hope to the tremendous numbers of hair loss sufferers and predicts that hair regrowth will probably be quicker and easier than ever before.
