OpenAI Comes Up with ChatGPT Atlas, an AI Browser That Could Rival Google Chrome

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-enabled browser that revolves around its landmark conversational agent, and directly competes with Google Chrome. The release is a significant milestone for OpenAI as it ventures outside the limits of chat and productivity applications and sets its sights on becoming an indispensable way of browsing and searching the internet.

ChatGPT is accessed more than 800 million times per week and OpenAI is determined to leverage the power of AI to create extremely simple and personalized online experiences for the users. In contrast to regular browsers, Atlas establishes a direct link of the user interface of the browser to ChatGPT to assist the users in carrying out tasks such as summarizing articles, comparing products, and analyzing data without interrupting a user’s flow on a certain webpage.

Its most attention-grabbing feature is undoubtedly “Agent Mode,” a functionality that is accessible only to paid subscribers. A person researching for a holiday is going to be able to just command ChatGPT to do the whole job on his behalf ranging from looking for the destination to hotel booking.

At the moment, the application is open to everyone worldwide and running on macOS, while the developers are working on versions for Windows, iOS, and Android, which will be available soon.

The launch is a result of a pressure of competition on Google in terms of AI-powered search. In order to provide an even more efficient search experience to the users, Google has lately embedded its Gemini AI model into Chrome. The AI summarizer, as well as the search engine result, help users get their tasks done in the most efficient way. Even so, Chrome is still holding the first place in the global browser market with a share of close to 72% according to StatCounter.

Experts assume that making chat a part of the browser can have very far-reaching consequences, such as introduce ads. “By adding chat in a browser, OpenAI is making a giant leap towards the point where it might start selling ads,” stated Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson. “If it occurs, then Google’s ads on the search page where it currently has about 90% of the market, can be affected.”

Meanwhile, as OpenAI blurs the distinction between chatbots and browsers, ChatGPT Atlas may be the instrument that changes the way users get in touch with the World Wide Web – thus, instead of using keywords to access data, users would rely on AI conversations that provide them with instant answers and even ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌actions.
