Study Highlights Zooplankton’s Crucial Role in Freshwater Health

A recent study by a freshwater expert has shed light on the often-overlooked role of zooplankton in maintaining the health and resilience of rivers and lakes. The Zooplankton are microscopic animals that drift in the water bodies and occupy an important position in freshwater food webs, supporting fish populations and the stability of the entire ecosystem.

The expert argued that zooplankton have amazing survival strategies that enable freshwater systems to heal following stress phases. These organisms are able to survive in very little water, survive dry days, and revive very fast when water returns during monsoon flows. This is the only adaptability that is necessary, especially in areas where there are high seasonal changes because they are required to regenerate their ecosystems.

In dry seasons, many rivers and lakes shrink or fragment into isolated pools. Zooplankton can survive these adverse conditions by entering dormant states, develop resistant eggs, or live in damp sediment. Once the waters in the bodies are restored by the monsoon, the life in the water immediately comes alive and grows exponentially, jump-starts the food chain, and helps to recover aquatic life.

The study highlights that zooplankton are also crucial  in controlling algae populations by feeding on phytoplankton. This helps in keeping the water clear and avoiding unnecessary algae blooms, which may lead to oxygen deprivation and threaten fish and other aquatic creatures. Their presence thus forms one of the major indicators of freshwater health.

Experts warn that pollution, excessive water extraction, and climate change pose serious threats to zooplankton diversity. Protecting freshwater habitats, maintaining environmental flows, and reducing pollution are crucial steps to ensure these microscopic organisms continue to support healthy rivers and lakes.

The findings highlight that conserving even the smallest life forms can have far-reaching benefits for freshwater ecosystems and human communities that depend on them.
