One of the most acclaimed advertising geniuses India has seen, and former Executive Chairman of Ogilvy India, Piyush Pandey, died almost a month later in a coma at the age of 70. This has been a massive loss to the advertising and creative fraternity.
Piyush Pandey was born in Jaipur, where he started his career in the world of advertising in 1982 when he was hired by Ogilvy and Mather as a trainee. In the last forty years, Pandey transformed the Indian advertising language and made the agency an international creative force. His new style of thinking introduced colloquial Hindi, modern humour, and emotional narrative to the mainstream adverts that were easily relatable in the whole country.
Most of the iconic campaigns in India were created by Piyush Pandey, such as the off-beat Fevicol ad, Cadbury’s Kuch Khaas Hai slogan, Asian Paints Har Khushi Mein Rang Laaye slogan, the Hutch You and I slogan and many more. Not only did his work sell brands, but it also influenced cultural memory.
His tenure saw Ogilvy India being one of the most awarded agencies in the world. In 2018, Piyush and his brother Prasoon Pandey were the first Asians to win the Lion of St. Mark award at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. In 2004, he became the first Asian president ever of the Cannes jury, and received the Padma Shri and the CLIO Lifetime Achievement Award.
Even with international recognition, Pandey was able to keep his feet on the ground and attributed his popularity to his teamwork. Contemporaries, celebrities.
Piyush Pandey has left a legacy of emotional storytelling and sincerity, which is still being adhered to by generations of filmmakers. His scripts are eternal patterns of heart, humour, and humanity of India.
